As an extra activity to interested residents booked in at Heritage Lodge on Ha’Buharo Island and Muko Camp site, Tangaza tours offers a bird watching tour on request early in the morning in the Nyombe Swamps. One can view a variety of species such as the African Jacana, Yellow Billed Duck, Long Tailed Cormorant, Great Cormorant and the Pink Backed Pelican

Lake Bunyonyi is a bird watcher's paradise! It holds 348 species of birds and contains 90 percent of all Albertine Rift Endemic species - an experienced bird watcher can identify up to 100 species in a day!

Please note that on your birding trip, you may need birding binoculars, an ornithology book for better identification of Uganda birds.

African Jacana

This bird is common near fresh water with floating vegetation as well as around swamps and on ponds and pools with suitable vegetation; the Jacana can be seen on most freshwater lakes in Uganda, better seen in Kabale on Lake Bunyonyi. The adult (above) is quite distinct but young birds which are smaller and haven't developed the obvious blue-grey shield can be confused with the Lesser Jacana. However the shield is always present and the young African Jacana has a black crown and hind-neck.

Yellow Eyed Black Fly Catcher

The Yellow-Eyed Black Flycatcher, Melaenornis Ardesiacus, is a small passerine bird only found in Africa. One can view it at Lake Bunyonyi in Kabale, where we have wonderful accommodation at Heritage Lodge Ha'Buharo Island on Lake a nearby camp site at Muko.

African Green Broadbill

African Green Broadbill is endemic to the Albertine Rift at the intersection of the Democratic Republic of Congo, Uganda, and Rwanda. It is amongst the most sought after birds in Africa. It has recently been found regularly in Mbwindi Swamp in the Bwindi Impenetrable Forest in south-western Uganda as well as neighboring Lake Bunyonyi in Kabale, where we have wonderful accommodation at Heritage Lodge Ha'Buharo Island on Lake Bunyonyi and a camp site at nearby Muko.

Long Tailed Comorant

The Long-Tailed Cormorant mostly prefers inland waters: slow-flowing rivers, lakes, swamps and ponds but is also found along coasts. In East Africa, they can be spotted around Lake Victoria and Lake Bunyonyi in Kabale, south-western Uganda. Its diet is mainly fish but it will also take frogs, crustaceans and aquatic insects.

Great Comorant

The White-Breasted Cormorant, sometimes treated as a separate species from the Great Cormorant, is restricted to Africa, predominantly Eastern and Southern Africa. It's a large, heavy bird which can be seen roosting in colonies on top of submerged boat-houses and fences.

Pink Backed Pelican

The Pink-backed Pelican can be found on any body of water that holds enough fish except the open sea. It is only visible in flight but it's much smaller and duller than the Great White.

Yellow Billed Duck

The Yellow Billed Duck (above) is more commonly seen in Uganda on fresh water lakes; it has a yellow bill. In our experience the best (easiest) place to see the Yellow-Billed duck is at Lake Bunyonyi in Kabale where we have wonderful accommodation at Heritage Lodge Island and a camp site at Muko camp site.
